Cutout too small

Sheet metal · Laser cutting · Plasma cutting · Flame cutting · Punching

Scope and limits

Holes, slots and cutouts smaller than the cutting-process minimum (laser 0.7-1.5 x t by thickness band, floor 0.5 mm; plasma/flame 1.0 x t). Sources: laserhub.com, GL-Laser, 247TailorSteel, Xometry, Protolabs; Practical Machinist for plasma. Replaces PRU-019.

Laser cutting · CC0-1.0

Hole too small for laser cutting

Model example

A single Ø3 hole in a 120 × 80 × 6 mm plate. Laser shops want holes of at least 0.7 × thickness = 4.2 mm in 6 mm steel, otherwise the pierce point leaves an out-of-round, slag-filled hole.

Dimensions (approx.): 120 × 80 × 6 mm

Expected check result

PRU-080 should warn that the hole is below the laser minimum (and nothing else).

Hole large enough for laser cutting

Model example

The same 120 × 80 × 6 mm plate with a Ø8 hole, above the 4.2 mm laser minimum for 6 mm steel.

Dimensions (approx.): 120 × 80 × 6 mm

Expected check result

PRU-080 must stay silent: the Ø8 hole is above the laser minimum.

Geometry preview: Hole below the common design-guide value

Laser cutting · CC0-1.0

Hole below the common design-guide value

Model example

A Ø5 hole in 6 mm plate. The checker only warns below 0.7 × t = 4.2 mm (fibre lasers manage this), but most design guides print 1 × t = 6 mm, so an INFO asks you to confirm with the supplier.

Dimensions (approx.): 160 × 100 × 6 mm

Expected check result

PRU-080 should report only an INFO (below the common value of 6 mm, above the hard limit of 4.2 mm) and nothing else.

Finding expected
