Thickness beyond cutting capability

Sheet metal · Laser cutting · Plasma cutting · Flame cutting

Scope and limits

Explicit laser_cutting only: INFO above the clean-cut band (steel 10, stainless 6, aluminium 4 mm; DIN EN ISO 9013-1 per GL-Laser/laserhub.com), WARNING above a typical 6 kW fibre-laser limit (steel 25, stainless 15, aluminium 12 mm).

Standards and references

ISO 9013:2017

Thermal cutting — Classification, geometrical specification and quality tolerances

Source scope
Public abstract lists laser cutting at 0.5–32 mm, plasma at 0.5–150 mm and flame cutting at 3–300 mm.
Implementation in Prufi
Published laser, plasma and flame thickness ranges are screened for orthogonal rectangular blanks and verified flat constant extrusions with through-holes, slots or planar/cylindrical outlines. Blind, stepped, tapered and folded stock remains unassessed. Explicit process selection only; no surface-quality tolerances or conformity assessment.

Plate too thick for a laser

Model example

A 200 × 160 × 28 mm steel plate. A typical 6 kW fibre laser cuts about 25 mm of mild steel; at 28 mm the shop must confirm its machine or switch to plasma or flame cutting.

Dimensions (approx.): 200 × 160 × 28 mm

Expected check result

PRU-084 should warn that the thickness exceeds laser capability (inside the ISO 9013 scope, so no scope notice).

Plate within laser capability

Model example

The same plate at 8 mm, below the configured 10 mm laser thickness screening threshold for mild steel. This does not guarantee a clean cut.

Dimensions (approx.): 200 × 160 × 8 mm

Expected check result

PRU-084 must stay silent: the thickness is below the configured screening threshold.
